Celtic Cross Tattoo Meaning

The Meaning of Celtic Cross Tattoo

The Celtic cross tattoo symbolizes many spiritual meanings. It is one of the most recognizable and popular tattoo designs today.

The basic Celtic cross design has a plain or decorated cross with a circular ring surrounding the intersection of the arms and vertical beam. This represents how life, nature and spirit come together. The cross symbolizes Christianity being brought to Ireland and Scotland by early missionaries.

But the original Celtic cross design pre-dates Christianity in the Celtic cultures of ancient Europe and the British Isles. To the Celts, the circular ring declared that there is no beginning or end to life, just continuous cycles of life, death and rebirth. The intersection of the cross quarters represented unity.

Many believe that getting inked with this iconic cross ink is a way to honor one's Celtic ancestry and heritage. Others see it as representing deep faith or spirituality. Some simply see it as a meaningful and attractive body art design. In under 200 words, the Celtic cross tattoo symbolizes how Christianity and ancient Celtic spiritual traditions merged over time into a meaningful symbol of faith, heritage, life and death cycles.
